Location

With your permission, the app reads your device's approximate or precise location while you use it (never in the background). It sends that position with your search so the server can return nearby events and calculate distances. We don't store your position against your account.

To decide which areas to fetch outside listings for, we record that someone searched in an area, rounded to a cell about 10 km wide, with no link to you.

You can use NearNow without location permission by searching for a postcode, address or place instead.

When you create an event, you choose how precisely its place is shown: exact, approximate (about 300 m) or area only. Approximate and area places are moved to the centre of a grid cell on our server before anyone else can see them.

How we use it

We don't use your data for advertising, we don't build marketing profiles, and we don't sell or rent personal data.

What other people see

Service providers

These companies process data on our behalf or provide content in the app:

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK or EU. Where they do, they rely on recognised safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep it

Deleting your account

In the app, open Profile → Settings → Delete account and confirm. This immediately and permanently deletes your account, profile, the events you host (with their participants and chat), your memberships, messages, notifications and settings.

If you can't use the app, email from your account's email address with the subject "Delete my NearNow account". We'll delete it within 30 days. More detail: deleting your NearNow account.

Reports you filed are deleted with your account. Reports other people made about you keep their text so moderators can act on repeated abuse, but they are no longer linked to your account.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, and ask for it in a portable format. You can withdraw consent, such as location permission, at any time.

Email us to use any of these rights. You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or the authority in your EU country.

Children

NearNow is only for adults aged 18 and over. You confirm your age when you create an account, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.

Security

All connections are encrypted (HTTPS). Database access is restricted row by row, so each person can only read and change what they are allowed to. Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and will tell you and the authorities about a breach where the law requires it.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also tell you in the app.
